Characters
Charlie Bucket:
Charlie Bucket is the main character in the novel. He is a young skinny boy that is around ten years old and comes from a very poor family. He wears worn-out clothes and hardly has enough to eat. He lives with his parents and four grandparents in their run down house. Charlie is a kind and considerate boy who would do anything for his family. His caring nature is shown by the way he talks to his parents and grandparents and also when he shared his only chocolate bar with all them even though he was very hungry.Charlie is very kind and caring, especially towards his grandpa Joe. This is shown by the way he cares for him during the chocolate factory tour.Charlie hopes for a better life for his family and in end his dreams come true. I think Charlie is a realistic character because he seems like a regular boy.
Willy Wonka:
Willy Wonka is the other main character in the novel. He is the owner of the chocolate factory. Willy Wonka is an odd man with a childlike personality . This is shown by the way he acts in the novel, he lives in a fantasy world and doesn't seem to have grown up. He believes children are they only ones who understand him , this is why he wanted to find a child to continue his work. Willy Wonka has an amazing imagination this is demonstrated by his crazy inventions and factory style. Willy Wonka's only family are the Oompa Loompas who he rescued , he seems to be lonely and looking for a family of his own. I think he is an unrealistic character because he is quite weird and I can't imagine anyone in the real world being like him.
Grandpa Joe:
Grandpa Joe is Charlie's ninety six year old grandpa. He has been in bed for many years, but when Charlie won the golden ticket he made an unbelievable effort to get out of bed and go with Charlie to the factory. Grandpa Joe is a kind man who loves Charlie very much. He is also very generous ,as shown when he offered Charlie his only money to buy a chocolate bar in the hope he might win a golden ticket. I think Grandpa Joe is a realistic character because he is a caring grandpa, however I don't think a real ninety six year old could get out of bed after many years and do what he did in the novel.
Mike Teavee:
Mike Teavee is a young boy from America who loves T.V. and wants to be a T.V. star. He continuously asked Mr Wonka questions and was quite annoying. Mike Teavee is outgoing and adventurous but also very selfish . This is shown in the novel when he goes against Mr Wonka's advice and gets zapped into pieces. I think he is a realistic character but not very likeable, he is rude to his parents and very demanding.
Augustus Gloop:
Augustus Gloop is a German boy who loves food. He went on the tour with his mother who doesn't seem to have any control over him. Augustus is very greedy and can't control himself , this is seen when falls into the chocolate river despite being told not to get too close. His greediness causes him to be the first child to leave the tour. Augustus is a realistic character because there are people like him that love food.
Veruca Salt:
Veruca Salt is a spoilt brat who lives with her wealthy parents who buy her everything. In the novel her favourite saying is " I want, I want , I want" and her father can't say no to her. She is very self centred and greedy. In the novel Veruca demands to have a nut sorting squirrel , despite Mr Wonka saying they are not for sale. Veruca not liking to be told no, tries to catch a squirrel and falls into the nut sorter. She is classified as a " bad nut" which describes her terrible behaviour. Her greediness also leads to her being removed from the tour. Veruca is a realistic character because I know that people can behave like her.
Violet Beauregardes:
Violet Beauregardes is a rude girl who is addicted to chewing gum. She talks and chews gum constantly and hates to be interrupted. Violet is another child who doesn't take no for an answer. This causes her to get into trouble in the novel. She ignores Mr Wonka's advice and eats a piece of experimental chewing gum which causes her to blow up like a violet blueberry. Violet is a realistic character but not very likeable, she is a selfish and disrespectful young girl.
Oompa Loompas:
Oompa Loompas are small orange men with green hair from Loompaland. They are very loyal to Mr Wonka because he rescued them from their home country. The Oompa Loompas are the workers in the factory and they sing songs to sum up why the children ended up in trouble on the tour. They describe the children's personalities in their songs. The Oompa Loompas are not realistic because Loompaland is an imaginary place and Oopa Loompas don't exist in real life.
Out of all the characters I feel most sympathy for Charlie because he deserves a better life than living in poverty. He is a likeable character because he is well mannered, kind and respectful of others. I feel least sympathy for Veruca Salt because she is a spoilt brat who is nasty to everyone and very self centred.
